Do Drugs Work For
Weightloss
A new study on resveratrol, which will also be presented during the Endocrine
Society's 90th Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California, revealed its potency against obesity. It was found that
this chemical compound, present in grapes and in red wine, inhibits pre-fat cell formation. In studies on mice fed
with a high-calorie diet, resveratrol provided them health protection especially against obesity and its related
diseases. The effects were similar to calorie restriction.
Scientists at the University of Ulm in Germany were curious on the same potency of
resveratrol in human fat cells. They were interested in altering the size and function of calories by using a
strain of human fat cell precursor termed preadipocytes. When preadipocytes are in the body for long, they become
mature fat cells. This was observed by Pamela Fischer-Posovszky, Ph.D., a pediatric endocrinology researcher at the
University of Ulm's Diabetes and Obesity Unit.
Resveratrol inhibits the pre-fat cells from growing and precluded them from
converting into mature fat cells. Another characteristic of resveratrol in fighting obesity is by forestalling fat
storage. Also, in the study of preadipocytes, they found a high production of interleukins 6 & 8, substances
that are associated with the development of obesity-related disorders like diabetes and clogged coronary
arteries.
The anti-obesity properties of resveratrol are purported directly against fat
cells and pre-fat cells. With this finding, scientists concluded that this chemical compound can be used to fight
obesity or to forestall it from developing.
The health benefits of resveratrol came into popularity when French nationals were
noticed to have shown strengths in health, long life, and youthfulness. French people are known to be constant
drinkers of red wine as part of their regular diet. When scientists began their study on red wines, the word
resveratrol popped up as the main active ingredient. Being an antioxidant, it has been endorsed in various products
for a variety of health reasons.
